Shiao (she/her) grew up in a farm in a rural Malaysian village. Fascinated by the concept of hijacking Nature’s machinery to design synthetic molecules, she first trained as a medicinal chemist in Australia where she developed a strong interests in peptidomimetics and drug discovery as a PhD student, and metal catalysis and bioorthogonal chemistry during her postdoctoral training.

Since October 2022, Shiao is Chancellor’s Fellow in the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry at the University of Strathclyde. Her independent research aims to create next generation peptidomimetics armed with the ability to perform bioorthogonal catalysis.
